How it works
01
Drop the Excel file
An .xlsx or macro-enabled .xlsm. It is checked by JavaScript in this tab and never uploaded — not here, and not to Google until you choose to.
02
See what Sheets would break
Links to other workbooks, Excel-only functions, macros, an open password, and Sheets' size limits are listed, and the fixable ones are fixed.
03
Import into Google Sheets
Download the prepared copy, then in Sheets choose File → Import → Upload. If nothing needed fixing, import your original as it is.
Google Sheets opens most Excel files on its own, so the conversion itself is a menu item. What goes wrong is the part nobody sees until after the import: a budget that pulled figures from another workbook now shows #REF!, a sheet using an Excel-only function shows #NAME?, macros silently stop, and a password-protected file will not import at all. This tool looks inside the .xlsx for exactly those cases, keeps the last values Excel calculated where a formula would break, and hands you a copy Sheets can take as it is.
How to import Excel into Google Sheets
- Into a new spreadsheet
- Open sheets.google.com and start a blank spreadsheet. Choose File → Import, open the Upload tab, and drop the .xlsx. Pick Replace spreadsheet, then Import data. Every sheet comes in as a tab.
- Into a sheet you already use
- In the existing spreadsheet, choose File → Import and upload the file the same way. Insert new sheet(s) adds the workbook's tabs next to yours; Append to current sheet adds its rows under your data.
- Through Google Drive
- Upload the .xlsx to Drive and double-click it. It opens in Sheets in Office editing mode with the .XLSX badge beside the name; choose File → Save as Google Sheets to get a native copy and keep the original.
- Every upload, automatically
- In Drive, open Settings and turn on Convert uploads to Google Docs editor format. From then on each Excel file you upload becomes a Google Sheet. Files already in Drive stay as they are.
Got a .numbers file from a Mac? Convert it with Numbers to Excel first. Importing a CSV instead? Sheets guesses its separator and dates, so turning it into .xlsx first keeps leading zeros and long IDs.
What breaks, and what the tool does
- #REF! where totals used to be
- A formula like ='[Budget.xlsx]Q1'!B4 reads another workbook on your computer, which Google cannot reach. The prepared copy keeps the value that formula last showed and removes the dead link.
- #NAME? in some cells
- Excel functions Sheets does not have — WEBSERVICE, FILTERXML, STOCKHISTORY, the CUBE functions, INFO, and a few more — are replaced by their last calculated value.
- “If the file is password protected, try removing the password”
- Sheets refuses workbooks with a password to open. Enter it once here and the downloaded copy is decrypted, with everything else in it untouched.
- Macros that no longer do anything
- Sheets cannot run VBA. The copy is saved as a plain .xlsx without the macro project; rebuild the automation in Extensions → Apps Script.
Sheet protection is not on the list because it does not stop the import. If you want the locks gone in the Excel file too, use Unprotect Excel sheet. Power Query and data connections come in as the data they last loaded, without a way to refresh — the tool flags them so you know which tabs to update by hand.
Common questions
- How do I convert Excel to Google Sheets?
- Open Google Sheets, choose File → Import, upload the .xlsx, and pick Replace spreadsheet or Insert new sheet(s). If the workbook links to other files, uses Excel-only functions, or has an open password, run it through the tool above first so those cells keep their values instead of turning into errors.
- Is my file uploaded to Celtrim?
- No. The workbook is unzipped, checked, and zipped again in your browser with local JavaScript. Nothing reaches a server until you upload the prepared copy to Google yourself.
- Will my formatting and formulas survive?
- Only cells that would break are changed: their formula is removed and the last value Excel calculated stays. Every other formula, the formatting, charts, conditional formatting, filters, and comments are copied through byte for byte, so Sheets imports them exactly as it would import the original.
- What are Google Sheets' size limits for Excel files?
- Google allows up to 20 million cells or 100 MB for a spreadsheet converted to Sheets, and any cell with more than 50,000 characters is removed during conversion. The tool counts the cells in your workbook and warns when it is over either limit.
- Can I keep using macros after moving to Google Sheets?
- Not as they are. Sheets runs Google Apps Script, a JavaScript dialect, not VBA, and there is no automatic translation. Keep the original .xlsm for reference and rewrite the macros you still need in Extensions → Apps Script.
