How it works
01
Drop the .numbers file
Any file saved by Numbers 3 or later, from a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iCloud. It is read by JavaScript in this tab and never uploaded.
02
Check the tables
Each table in the file appears as its own sheet, with the first rows shown so you can see the values came through.
03
Download the .xlsx
One Excel workbook with every table in it, ready for Excel on Windows or Mac, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice.
Someone sends a .numbers file, and on Windows nothing opens it: Excel does not read the format and Apple ships Numbers only for its own devices. Inside, a Numbers document is a zip of compressed binary archives describing sheets, tables, and cells. This converter reads those archives in your browser, rebuilds each table as a worksheet with the same values and types, and writes a standard .xlsx you can open in Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice. Nothing is uploaded at any point.
What comes across
- Kept
- Text, numbers, currencies and percentages as numbers, dates and times as real Excel dates, checkboxes as TRUE or FALSE, links, merged cells, and every table on every sheet.
- Kept as values
- Formulas. Each cell holds the result Numbers last calculated, so totals and lookups show the same figures. The formula text itself is not rebuilt in Excel syntax.
- Left behind
- Fonts, fill colours, borders, charts, images, and shapes. Numbers stores them in a layout model Excel has no equivalent for, so the workbook gets clean default styling.
- Not readable
- Files with a password, and files from Numbers ’09 or older. Remove the password or re-save the file in a current Numbers first.
Moving the workbook on to Google Sheets afterwards? Run it through Excel to Google Sheets for the import steps. Only need the data in a flat file? Convert the result from XLSX to CSV.
Exporting from Numbers itself
If you have the Numbers app, its own export keeps formulas and most styling, and it is worth using. On a Mac, open the file and choose File → Export To → Excel, pick whether each table gets its own worksheet, and save. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the More button, then Export, then Excel. On iCloud.com, open the spreadsheet in Numbers for iCloud and download a copy as Excel. The converter here is for the other case: you are on Windows, on a work laptop without an Apple ID, or simply want the data out without installing anything.
Dates are written as Excel dates in the 1900 date system that Excel for Windows uses, so a date entered in Numbers shows the same day in Excel instead of shifting by four years. Blank rows and columns that Numbers adds to every new table are trimmed, and the first row of each table is bold and frozen, which you can switch off before downloading.
Common questions
- How do I open a Numbers file on Windows?
- Excel for Windows cannot open .numbers files, and Apple makes no Numbers app for Windows. Drop the file into the converter above and open the .xlsx it gives you in Excel. If you have an Apple ID, iCloud.com can also open the file in a browser and download it as Excel.
- Do I need a Mac or the Numbers app?
- No. The file is decoded in your browser, so the converter works the same on Windows, Linux, a Chromebook, or a phone. That is the point of it: whoever sent you a .numbers file does not have to export it again.
- Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
- No. A .numbers file is a zip archive, and the archive is unpacked and read by local JavaScript in this tab. Nothing is sent to a server, stored, or logged, so it works on confidential files and with the connection switched off.
- Will my formulas still work in Excel?
- Formulas arrive as their last calculated values, which keeps every number you saw in Numbers. If you need live formulas, open the file in Numbers and use File → Export To → Excel, which translates them; for a file you cannot open on a Mac, the values are what you get.
- What happens to a sheet with several tables?
- Numbers lets one sheet hold many tables side by side, while Excel has one grid per sheet. Each table becomes its own worksheet, named after the sheet it came from, so nothing is overlapped or dropped.
- Why does it say my file is a package?
- Older Numbers versions could save a document as a folder instead of a single file. Browsers cannot read a folder as one file. In Numbers, choose File → Save As, set the file format to a single file under Advanced Options, and convert the new copy.
