How it works
01
Drop the PDF
The file is opened in your browser and the text on every page is read with its exact position. Password-protected PDFs open once you type the password.
02
Check the rows and columns
Lines of text become rows and the gaps between them become columns. The preview shows the table as it will land in Excel.
03
Download the .xlsx
All pages on one sheet, or one sheet per page. Amounts arrive as numbers you can sum, IDs keep their leading zeros.
A PDF does not store a table. It stores pieces of text and the exact spot on the page where each one is drawn, which is why copying a table out of a PDF pastes as one long jumble. This converter reads those positions: text that shares a baseline becomes a row, and the vertical gaps that run through every row become the column boundaries. Invoices, price lists, reports, and exports from accounting software come out as a grid you can sort and sum. Going the other way? Convert Excel to PDF.
What it cannot read
- Scanned pages and photos
- A scan is a picture of a page, with no text inside it to read. The converter says so instead of guessing. Those need OCR, which this free tool does not do.
- Text that wraps inside a cell
- A description spread over two lines in the PDF arrives as two rows, the second with only that column filled. Join them in Excel, or widen the column in the source before exporting.
- Several tables side by side
- Columns are found from the gaps the rows share, so two tables printed next to each other come out as one wide table. Tables stacked one above the other are fine.
- Charts and drawn lines
- Only text is read. Cell borders, shading, and charts are left behind, and the numbers inside a chart are not recovered.
Have the table as a CSV or a Word document instead? Use CSV to Excel or Word to Excel.
Common questions
- How do I convert a PDF to Excel?
- Drop the PDF onto the converter above. Every page is read, the table is rebuilt from the position of each piece of text, and you download an .xlsx workbook. There is no account and no email step.
- Does it work with scanned PDFs?
- No. A scanned PDF is an image of a page and has no text layer to read, so the converter tells you that rather than inventing data. If you can select and copy text in the PDF, it will convert.
- Will the numbers be usable in Excel?
- Yes. Values like 1,249.00 or 59.88 are written as real numbers, so SUM and sorting work straight away. Numbers that start with a zero or run past 15 digits, such as account numbers, are kept as text so nothing is rounded.
- What happens with a table that runs over several pages?
- By default every page goes onto one sheet in order, so a long table continues where it left off. Untick All pages on one sheet to get one sheet per page instead.
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. The PDF is read with pdf.js and the workbook is built in your browser. The file and any password you type never leave your device, and nothing is stored or logged.
